Author Mardi Maxwell Interview

Business before Pleasure:

  1. What inspired you to write your first book?

My best friend talked me into actually sending one of my books in to a publisher. I sent it to Siren and they accepted it. I was totally shocked, but thrilled. So, I took early retirement from my day job and started writing full time. That series was The Doms of Club Mystique.

  1. How much real life do you put into or influences your books?

Probably more than I should. I use my life experiences in my books, as well, as people I’ve known. My friends and old boyfriends (who are now friends) know that sooner or later they will show up in one of my books.

  1. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

Staying off of Facebook and You Tube. When I’m doing research it’s so easy to get distracted and spend hours goofing off. And, then there’s always that point you reach in a book when you think you’ve written yourself into a corner and you’re going to have to trash the book and start over. I’ve learned to give it a few days and eventually I’ll figure out an escape route.

  1. What are your current projects?

I’m work on book 7 of The Doms of Club Mystique series, Her Viking Dom. Its about Thor Larkin and Marisol Reyes. Then, after it I go on to book five in the Zarrnian Warror series; and then book two of the Mating Challenge.

  1. How do you go about choosing the title for your book(s)?

I usually just use a working title. Sometimes it sticks and other times it doesn’t. I poll my friends (readers and writers) to get their opinion.

  1. What is your favorite genre to write?

Romance…especially erotic romance whether its set on Earth or in the stars. I do love science fiction though so a combination is my favorite.

  1. Generally, how long does it take you to complete a book from idea to handing it over to your publisher?

Anywhere from two to four months. Depends on how complex the idea and characters are and if they cooperate. Characters have a tendency to take on a life of their own and want to tell their own story.

  1. Do you ever use someone in your life as a sounding board for ideas or do you prefer to work alone?

My friends groan when they see me arrive at their home with a couple bottles of wine because they know I’m putting them to work. lol   I value their opinions and I trust them to never steer me wrong.

  1. Do your travel to research for your book(s)?

Yes. Especially with Thor’s book. He ends up in some unusual places and I had to get a “feel” for them by going there. Don’t ask…it’s a secret.

  1. Did you learn anything while writing your book(s)?

Yes, I’m a control freak and extremely competitive. Never knew that about myself as I’m usually very laid back. Although I have to say I only compete against myself and as far as control I got that from my mother so I came by it honestly. I’m also very disorganized. Ask anyone I know. I ask them multiple times for addresses, reminders, etc. I think I used to try to stay organized but now it’s a free for all.

  1. Have you ever had an idea for a book but never written it and what is it?

Yes, I told my dentist I was working on a book about a serial killer who only killed serial killers. The next year Dexter came out.

  1. When writing, do you have a process?

Coffee, looking at blank screen, going to check for mail and boxes on my porch (love getting boxes on the porch), more coffee, more staring at blank screen, more coffee, format the page and type a working title, breakfast, put a load of laundry in the machine, make a Word table for characters (names, description, age, what they do for a living, their weakness, strength, beliefs, etc), ice water and aspirin, tell myself enough is enough and write something, nap, put something in the crock pot for dinner, continue writing even if I know I’ll edit and rewrite it the next morning.

  1. Do you have any advice for new authors looking to make their own literary statement?

The same advice every gives…WRITE. Trust yourself. Trust that you have something to say. Wrok on it. It’s a craft you learn until the day you die. The 20th book is no easier to write than the first one. You just have more confidence on the 20th one.

  1. How many books have you written? Do you have a particular favorite?

Twelve and working on the next three. I love Nate’s Naughty Nymph – it surprised even me and just appeared, like magic.

  1. Why did you choose to use a publisher instead of self-publishing?

I used a publisher for The Doms of Club Mystique series. Now I self-publish the Zarronian Warrior series, A Time to Love series, and the new one – The Mating Challenge series.

  1. Where do your ideas come from?

I have a great imagination and an over busy brain. Everything I see or hear can spark the idea for a book. Nothing and nobody is off limits.

  1. How many books do you currently have published?

Eleven with a new one coming out Monday, November 14, 2016 – Wynter’s Warrior (The Mating Challenge)

  1. Are you working on anything right now?

Her Viking Dom (The Doms of Club Mystique 7) hopefully for SirenBookstrand.

  1. Do you have a favorite Hero or Heroine from any of your books and why?

Nate from Nate’s Naughty Nymph (The Doms of Club Mystique 5) but I’ve been told you’ll enjoy all the books if you read them in order (To Love and Obey; Jackson’s Sub; Their Temporary Sub: Zane’s Choice; Nate’s Naughty Nymph; The Ramsey Doms; and coming soon hopefully Her Viking Dom).

  1. Do you have anything you would like to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read your work(s)?

Reading is so important. It’s a pleasure you can take with you no matter where you go. It’s a way to see the world without even leaving your home. It’s a way to escape into another world when you need a break from the reality of troubles and sorrows. I hope I bring a laugh to your lives and maybe a few tears (they’re cleansing you know?), and mostly I hope you love my books and reach out to chat with me. Join Facebook, if you don’t already belong, then come to the book parties I attend and chat with me. I’m just a normal person who fails at gardening but refuses to give up, cooks and has flops every now and then, and has a family I love who sometime drive me nuts. I just happen to got lucky and got to have my dream of writing come true – thanks to my readers.

More About You ~ The Fun and the Naughty

  1. Share one thing about yourself that would surprise people who know you.

I’m introverted but not shy. I need solitude to be healthy.

  1. Doggy style, cow girl or missionary? Sneak attack early in the morning when you wake up and realize your lover is touching you and you come. 😉
  1. What secret sinful pleasure do you keep hidden in your cupboards?

Pumpkin pie. I love it and I’ll eat the entire thing without sharing.

  1. Are you a wine or beer kinda gal? Depends on my mood. When reading, wine. When watching TV, beer.
  1. If you could go anywhere at all on your next vacation where would you go.

Ireland (then across to Wales then around Scotland then to London and end in Cornwall)

  1. If you could choose any hot famous guy to take with you who would it be and why?

Gerald Butler – he knows how to drive there and he’s lovely to look at and I like his voice.

  1. Thong, Bikinis, Granny Panties, or Boy shorts? Boy shorts. I like comfort.
  1. Are you a dress up in heels or a jeans and flats woman?

  1. Homebody or Party all the time girl?

Meet friends in a restaurant – take over a room and eat / party / laugh and chat.

  1. Tall, Dark and Deadly or Smart and Sexy or Athletic and Funny?

I’ve had the tall (if you count 6’ as tall), dark, and deadly who was smart, sexy and funny. But he wasn’t athletic as he was as laid back as I am. Not to say he couldn’t strike fast if motivated. Getting another version of that is on my bucket list. I like a regular old good boy with great attitude.

  1. Significant other or Tearing up the town free and clear?

Significant other. I love, and miss, sharing my life and experiences with someone special.

  1. Favorite social network and why?

Ugh, I’m not good at social networks so I’ll have to settle for Facebook right now. I use Twitter and I have a blog, etc. I need a class with a real instructor, not a internet video.

  1. What was your “dream” job as a child?

Veterinarian – I loved animals and my older siblings wouldn’t play with me but I’m allergic to cats and dogs. When I was young I didn’t care. Since then I’ve had dogs but I kept them out of my face and off the furniture.

  1. What was the worst job you ever had while working towards being a published author?

Social worker. It’s the saddest job in the world and at the same time the most satisfying. I love helping people.

  1. What would be your next best choice if not writing as a career?

Happily married woman of a millionaire who wants to travel and have fun.
