Author Dave Rudden Interview

Dave Rudden (1975 – still kicking) born in St Louis MO to a blue collar family. United States Marine and former police officer. Worked his way through college to earn a computer science degree and land an engineering job. Earned two master degrees while working full time and raising three boys with his wife Kristy. Enjoys writing as a hobby and wants to share his stories with the world. Follow him on Face Book @ https://www.facebook.com/TheDaveRudden

Business before Pleasure:

What inspired you to write your first book? Years ago I came up with an idea for a story, and as an engineer a picked the idea apart until I had built and entire universe in my head. The entire story I plan on writing starts 4000 years ago, when magic and dragons were not only real but also controlled the world. As I continued to pick at the story, I realized that I need a team of hunters to help save the modern world from the evil things I have planned, but simply having a team in place wasn’t good enough for me. I had to do something to add to the pain and suffering of the hunters to build up their characters. This was the motivation behind AGE OF HUMANITY: BORN HUNTER.

BORN HUNTER is a background story of the last of the long line of hunters. Which is followed by four more background stories all geared to building up characters for a much larger story. I wanted to give my characters enough depth so my readers feel there pain and suffering. I hope this will add to the experience of reading my books. To many times I have read books where the hero has super powers without explaining where the powers came from, or the justification for the powers is unbelievable. I didn’t want someone to say the same thing about my books.

How much real life do you put into or influences your books? A lot. I try to use as many real places and people that I can, while taking a bit of a creative twist. I also try to bring in other fiction events and claim that they are also real. My goal is to make a world in my books were all magical stories we grew up reading are true events in history.

What is the hardest part of writing for you? The hardest parts for me is making sure every conversation and line in my books hold a purpose without making it feel as if it is being forced. When people talk there is a natural flow to how the conversation goes. If I need a character to devolve a criterial piece of information to another, it needs to seem like a natural dialog. One of my reviews even called one of the conversations tactical in nature.

I also want to give the readers just enough information to understand the scene, with just enough detail to let their imagination take hold. I will spend hours, if not longer, working out just the right thing to say to give the reader a good feel for what is going on. If I have to people talking in the backroom of a bar, I might say, the bar is poorly lite, with the lingering stench of old cigarette smoke. That gives the readers that ability to picture a bar in their mind without having to spend three pages detailing how the furniture looks if it holds no value to the overall story.

Every word in my books holds a purpose and that is not always easy to do.

What are your current projects? There are a lot of things I am working on. Here is the list. (I wish I were kidding)

AGE OF MAGIC: THE LOST – story of a boy named Von who finds himself in the middle of a magic war.

Written but not published

AGE OF MAGIC: BLOOD OF KINGS– Von’s story continues and he is forced to decide between what is right and honoring his king. – In work

AGE OF HUMATIY: BORN HUNTER – Self-published. Story of the last in a long line of magic hunters, set in the 1960’s and 70’s

AGE OF HUMATIY: I AM A GHOST – Self-published. Story of a young man who grew up as a magic hunter and wants to get away from it all, only to find out he can’t escape.

AGE OF HUMATIY: SMALL VICTORIES – Story of Samantha Jackson as she grows up to be an FBI agent and finds herself facing in the middle of the war with the paranormal. – In edit.

AGE OF HUMATIY: EYE OF THE BULLET – Natali was raised in Russian orphanages and she soon becomes one of the deadliest women alive. – In edit

AGE OF HUMATIY: THE DOCTOR – Billy Bob was always a man out of place. Even after receiving his Doctorate degree from Harvard, life in the back wood of Tennessee fit him more the world of academia. That is until his family is put in the middle of an ancient war between vampires and werewolves.   – In edit

Several Chronicles of Oni stories are in edit now. These stories are fan driven. Oni is one of the few characters that live for the entire 4000 years and in these stories fans get to make a up a character for Oni to interact with. It is a lot of fun and very challenging making an entire short story around someone else creation. Some of these stories are already post on my author Facebook page and are free to read.

My latest idea is to make five diaries depicting real people during a zombie event. I will write five diaries from real people’s point of view during a zombie attack. This will be really challenging as I try to write from another person viewpoint. I already have one fan who won the opportunity to be the first during my annual on-line costume contest for Halloween. I just need to hold contest for the other four winners.

How do you go about choosing the title for your book(s)? Normal I try to find a line in the story that will express the point of the book, with a bit of a twist. BRON HUNTER is a line that describes the hero Drew as he was born into hunting. While I AM A GHOST is a line used by Jack at the end of the book to describe his view on life.

What is your favorite genre to write? I write all fiction. There is a lot of magic and paranormal in my books. I also have plans to write some science fiction stories and have even written a steam puck story. I know I cross genres but it the stuff that I love. It is difficult to write at times, but it is a lot of fun for me.

Generally, how long does it take you to complete a book from idea to handing it over to your publisher? It can take months if not years for me. I go back and rewrite things based of what my first line editor thinks. I can write a short story in few days, but my editor is a bit slower and takes her time. One day I hope to be able to write full time which will speed things up considerable.

Do you ever use someone in your life as a sounding board for ideas or do you prefer to work alone? I use my wife as a soundboard and my first editor. She keeps me in check and makes sure my stories are believable, as much as a story about a vampire can be.

Do your travel to research for your book(s)? Only through the power of the internet. It is amazing what information is at my fingertips. I wrote an entire story set in Russia and used a lot of real places in the book. It takes time, but I want to be as accurate as I can be.

Did you learn anything while writing your book(s)? My spelling and typing have improved considerably.

I have learned a lot during my research about places and cultures all over the world. I have also learned the most valuable thing and author can have is a good editor.

Have you ever had an idea for a book but never written it and what is it? I have considering writing more adult romance books in the hopes of building my reader base, but it is not my style. Not because I can’t write love scenes, but only because I want my story to be something my kids can read one day. Sex in my books is suggested and is never described in detail. Romance however plays a big part when it fits the story. The wedding scene in I AM A GHOST is taken from my feelings when I married my wife. It is romantic and you can feel the love the couple has for each other without taking it to the bedroom.

When writing, do you have a process? Try to keep the kids quiet.

Give me a keyboard and I will be writing.

Do you have any advice for new authors looking to make their own literary statement? Listen to the reviews, but don’t let them bring you down. Everyone has opinions, but to ignore them is one of the worst things you can do. People may not like your story or the way you write, and those can be somewhat ignored. However if several people are saying you need more research or the story doesn’t flow correctly, those are what you need to take to heart. Don’t let them discourage you. Learn from them and grow as an author.

The other piece of advice I have is to find and editor.

How many books have you written? Do you have a particular favorite? I have written several and published two. I love all my stories. Everyone is creative and special to me as part of my overall story. Can’t say I have a favorite.

Why did you choose to use a publisher instead of self-publishing? I am self-published for a few of my books, but the reachability of a traditional publisher is becoming very appealing to me. This is strictly a business decision that I am exploring.

Where do your ideas come from? My ideas are all mine. I use tidbits of ideas from other books and movies, but I make them my own. The best example of this is my character Oni. He is a 4000 year old master of marital arts and is very wise in his ways. I took the idea of him from old Kung-Fu movies but Oni is a white man in his early thirties with a shaved head instead of the old Kung Fu master with a long beard as depicted in the movies.

How many books do you currently have published? Two self-published.

Are you working on anything right now? A ton of stuff. Currently I am writing AGE OF MAGIC: BLOOD OF KINGS but there are several things at different stages of the editing process.

Do you have a favorite Hero or Heroine from any of your books and why? I have always been drawn to the paranormal hunters, but I have to say I am big Batman fan. I think it is because his is a man without super natural powers who does amazing things. He is smart, quick and strong and always finds a way to get the job done.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read your work(s)? If you have read my books, thank you. I hope you keep reading.

For those you haven’t read my books I ask that you take a look at my reviews and pick one of my books up. If you like a good strong story, I will not disappoint.

More About You ~ The Fun and the Naughty

Share one thing about yourself that would surprise people who know you.?I have an incredibly dirty mind. One of the reasons I don’t write sex scenes is because I could go on for hours and get all kinds of crazy ideas. That and my wife won’t let me use her for the research stage for those types of books.

Doggy style, cow girl or missionary? Yes please. I roll with what my partner wants, even before I was married. I want to make sure my partner reaches her climax. I have my likes but in the end, all sex is good sex.

What secret sinful pleasure do you keep hidden in your cupboards? If I told you it wouldn’t be a secret. Even at my age, I have the sex drive of a twenty year old. If I had things my way, I would have sex three or four times a day.

Are you a wine or beer kinda gal? Well I am not a gal. Beer, wine, whisky all depends on what I am in the mood for and what is in front of me. I don’t drink a lot, but when I do I am not picky.

If you could go anywhere at all on your next vacation where would you go

Ireland. That is where my family is from and has an interesting mystic history to it that has always called to me.

If you could choose any hot famous guy to take with you who would it be and why? Sorry no guys in my bedroom fantasies. Can’t say I would be picky on the girls though. I like real woman. Ones that are down to earth with a bit of meat to them. If the girl is to skinny, I feel that I might break them.

Thong, Bikinis, Granny Panties, or Boy shorts? She can wear whatever see wants as long as it ends up in the corner of the bedroom. I wear boxers and have a weakness for a woman in lingerie. I also like a woman in just a robe for a hint of a tease.

Are you a dress up in heels or a jeans and flats woman? Do boots count as heels? I wear jeans mostly but am comfortable in a suit as well. Still not a woman.

Homebody or Party all the time girl? I am catching a theme to these questions. You don’t have many male authors.

I spend a lot of time at home only because I normally have a lot of work to do, but I like to get out and party.

Tall, Dark and Deadly or Smart and Sexy or Athletic and Funny? I would say I am smart and sexy meets deadly and funny. I am not a small man but more broad than buck. I have two master degrees and have been known to make a few jokes. At the same time I know how to make a woman go weak in the knees.

Significant other or Tearing up the town free and clear? Been married for over fifteen years and won’t change it for the world.

Favorite social network and why? I am a Facebook junky but I have been known to tweet from time to time.

What was your “dream” job as a child? I wanted to be Rambo. I even joined the Marine Corps. I was also a police officer. Never thought I would ever write a book.

What was the worst job you ever had while working towards being a published author? I worked for a job where my boss was a complete A-hole. No matter what I did or how good I was, she always found something I did wrong in her eyes.

What would be your next best choice if not writing as a career? I am still trying to make writing my career. Currently I am an engineer and love it.

How would you characterize their relationship in one word answers, start, middle and end?

Start – honest

Middle – loving

End – passionate

Fate always wins.

Blurb:

When Jack Riley enrolled in college, he hoped to get a taste of the normal life and escape the world of magic for a few years. Instead, he finds himself leading a team of people who search the world for magical items. When an ancient vampire seeks revenge against the hunters, Jack pays a heavy price for his actions.

All the ways a person could describe Jack Riley’s childhood, “normal” is not one of them. Growing up in a community of monster hunters would not be easy for any boy, but for Jack things were strange than for most of the other children. His father was the one of the best hunter in the community, his mother was a power witch and his sister was a witch in training.

When Jack decided to go away for college, he had hoped to experience a bit of a normal life. Instead, he found himself unable to escape magic or his training. By the time he graduated, he was the leader of a small team that tracked down magical items. Under the tutelage of a four thousand year old former wizard, Jack and his team scoured the globe looking for any magic al items, so they could keep them out of the hands of those who use them for darkness.

Holding the fate of his team in his hands, Jack was forced to make a hard choice in order to save them from a powerful enemy. A choice he will regret for the rest of his life.
