Author Caitlyn O’Leary Interview

Aviary Photo_130814500842968679What inspired you to write your first book? Back when I was reallllllly young. 4th grade. I knew I wanted to write. I’ve read so many books, from biographies, science fiction, horror, romance and true crime. Thirty years ago I bought a word processor and started my first novel, but I ended up moving up through the corporate ranks at Verizon so I stopped. Two years ago I was only working about 10-20 hours a week on a consulting gig and was bored, so I decided to write a book.

How much real life do you put into or influences your books? All of my books contain people and romance, so I would say that a lot of my influences come from real life. Now the part of my books that are menage, Navy SEALS and alternate universes, that is all imagination.

What is the hardest part of writing for you? Finding time. I work a pretty intense job these days, and I want to make sure I spend enough time with my husband.

What are your current projects?I am working on the second book in my Navy SEAL series called “Her Loyal SEAL”. That is Clint and Lydia’s story. I will have that coming out in December.   I will have “Beloved” the fourth book in my FOUND series coming out Feb/March. That is Dakota and Gabriella’s story.

How do you go about choosing the title for your book(s)? Good question. Each of my books have a format. For example I have one word titles for the FOUND series, and 3 word titles for the SEAL series containing the word SEAL. For Clint and Lydia’s story I was writing it, and realized just how Loyal Clint was to Lydia, and that was how the title came to me.

What is your favorite genre to write? Probably the one with the science fiction aspect. I love how my imagination gets to run free.

Generally, how long does it take you to complete a book from idea to handing it over to your publisher? It can take anywhere from 2 to 4 months. My FOUND and SEAL series are independently published by me. My FATE HARBOR Series, (The menage books) are published by Siren

Do you ever use someone in your life as a sounding board for ideas or do you prefer to work alone? I have some awesome Beta Readers, and I have some fellow authors that I talk to about my books.   I have sometime talked to my husband, but his eyes glaze over.

Do your travel to research for your book(s)? A lot of the locations for my books take place in places I have already visited.

Did you learn anything while writing your book(s)? I research a lot in my books, so yes I have. I now subscribe to Scientific American, so that it helps me come up with really cool ideas.

Have you ever had an idea for a book but never written it and what is it? Nope, not so far. LOL

When writing, do you have a process? Yes, whenever I have a problem getting an idea, I start swimming laps, and then it gets me kick-started. Thank God I live in South California.

Do you have any advice for new authors looking to make their own literary statement? READ, READ, READ, READ. You really need to understand the craft and the best way to do this is to read other authors. Then you get started, and just start writing. Also, have beta readers, it is imperative that you have feedback from “readers” NOT “authors” about your books.

How many books have you written? Do you have a particular favorite? 9 books. 5 in the Fate Harbor Series, 3 in the Found Series, 1 in the Midnight Delta Navy Seal Series. My favorite book is always the last one I have written.

Why did you choose to use a publisher instead of self-publishing? I chose a Publisher to begin with for Fate Harbor so I could learn the business. Then I decided to branch out on my own.

Where do your ideas come from? I don’t really know. LOL

Are you working on anything right now? I am working on Her Loyal Seal which will come out next month.

Do you have a favorite Hero or Heroine from any of your books and why? Yes, Sam from the Fate Harbor series. He appears in all five of my Fate Harbor books, and he has grown and matured so much.   I LOVE him.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read your work(s)? If you’re thinking of reading my books, just read the blurb and first page. That’s how I always decided to read a book. It’s a great indication of whether you’ll like the style of the author. My books might not be a good fit for you. Of course I like them, I wrote them. LOL
