Author Ava K Michaels Interview

A K Michaels was born in Scotland quite a number of years ago! She was married at a young age and is a mother to three much loved children. After the birth of her last child she went back to higher education and studied for a year before gaining employment in the banking industry. She worked in that role for a number of years before leaving, both the job and the country.

She lived abroad for a few years before returning to Scotland and finally taking up her dream – writing.

She is the author of the Defender’s Blood series of books and two other series, The Witch, The Wolf and the Vampire and also Sabrina’s Vampire, together with a Wolf Erotica Novella, Lori’s Wolf. Her books fall into the Paranormal/Urban Fantasy genre and she loves writing those particular kinds of stories where she can let her imagination run wild!

Business before Pleasure:

What inspired you to write your first book? I have ocd and anxiety issues, and writing was part of my therapy, when therapist used to listen to me telling her about all these stories in my head, she challenged me to write them out. Took me a wee while to take her up, but once I started writing, I couldn’t stop!

How much real life do you put into or influences your books? Hmm, I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think an awful lot. Apart from bad people getting their comeuppance in the most gruesome ways lol. Now there are some terrible peeps out there that do bad things and I love thinking that maybe they could be dealt with in the same manner!

What is the hardest part of writing for you? Finding the peace and quiet to do it. I hate noise, am quite sensitive to it, and find I focus much better when there is silence. However, I help both of our daughters with childcare so they can work, so have munchkins at least three or four times a week. Hence, finding peace and quiet can sometimes be hard.

What are your current projects? Oh, I’ve got a few at the moment. I’m working on The Black Rose Chronicles, Book 3, right now and I’ve got a brand new series I’m just desperate to get started! It’s about the Guild of Dragon Warriors and some of the characters from that will be in a bit of Rose 3.

How do you go about choosing the title for your book(s)? Usually the main character for a book comes to me first, and then I go from there. Then I do a lot of searching online to make sure nobody else has used it lol.

What is your favorite genre to write? Paranormal, with romance, suspense and plenty of action. I love the fact that I can then let my imagination go totally wild and I don’t have the constraints of mere humans lol.

Generally, how long does it take you to complete a book from idea to handing it over to your publisher? I’m an Indie, with my ocd issues, I like full control of everything, from covers, formatting, editor and everything in between. I have a team in place, but they were all picked by me, and we work wonderfully together. I think the fastest I’ve written a full book was two weeks of non-stop writing, then it goes to my beta readers, then to editor. So, probably the quickest was around a month. Usually it’s a bit longer than that but I can write and release a book, usually, within two months.

Do you ever use someone in your life as a sounding board for ideas or do you prefer to work alone? One of our daughters is good for sounding things off to, also, the girls who do my covers and swag, Becca, Angel and Stracey, they are also good for talking things through.

Do your travel to research for your book(s)? Nope, Google is my best friend lol!

Did you learn anything while writing your book(s)? I’ve learned a ton of stuff. From the basics of publishing, to editing, to how covers are so important when showcasing a book, and a hundred other things too. Mainly I’ve learned how weird my brain is lol, from a character to a new story can be very quick indeed.

Have you ever had an idea for a book but never written it and what is it?Not yet, so far any ideas I’ve had I’ve followed through on. I’m lucky that I’m a full time author, so I can indulge my ideas.

When writing, do you have a process? Not really, I know a lot of authors have notes and outlines, but I don’t. I have the story in my head and it’s a case of sitting and typing it all out, like a ‘brain dump’.

Do you have any advice for new authors looking to make their own literary statement? Be prepared to work hard, very very hard, if you want to be successful. I work at least 70 hours a week, sometimes it’s over 100, especially in run up to and including week of a new release. I work 7 days a week, and it can be very tiring. Also be prepared for people to not like what you write. All authors, even the hugely successful ones like Stephen King, get bad reviews. The first one you get can sting lol, but you have to just let it wash away. It’s a waste of time and energy otherwise. Get a good team behind you too, if needs be, ask other authors for recommendations for cover artists, editors, etc. Be careful, because there are people out there who take advantage of newbies, so the best way is to ask others for advice. Don’t be afraid to do that, we’re a friendly bunch lol.

How many books have you written? Do you have a particular favorite? I’ve written almost thirty books to date and I don’t have one favorite, I have a few lol. I love The Witch, The Wolf and The Vampire series as Peri, the Witch from the title, grows so much throughout the series and I loved seeing her grow from someone on their own and on the run, to finding her true strength and being rather kickass. I adore my Highland Wolf Clan series, totally love my Highlanders! And Rose from The Black Rose Chronicles, boy, she is badass, strong and deadly, a really strong female and we don’t always get those in books.

Why did you choose to use a publisher instead of self-publishing? I’m an Indie, so I chose the self-publishing route because I honestly couldn’t hand over any rights to my work to anyone else lol. I like to be in control of everything, so if I succeed or fail, it’s all down to me.

Where do your ideas come from? I honestly have no idea lol. Sometimes though, a new series comes while I’m writing a story and the character that I’m adding just screams to have their own stories told.

How many books do you currently have published? Almost thirty at the moment.

Are you working on anything right now? I’m always working lol. I’ve always got new things to start the moment I finish something. I’m trying to get Rose 3 finished so I can start on new Dragon series.

Do you have a favorite Hero or Heroine from any of your books and why?Hero, oh dang, do I need to pick just one? If so, shoot, okay, this is hard, but I’ll go with Cameron Sinclair from Highland Wolf Clan series. He’s so against becoming an Alpha, or settling down, that it’s rather nice to watch him fight against it all.

Heroine, I absolutely love Rose from The Black Rose Chronicles. She is sassy and strong, and takes no nonsense from anyone. I love her.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read your work(s)?

For anyone who has read my stories, an absolutely huge thank you for spending precious time to read them. I sincerely hope you enjoyed whatever you read, and come over and let me know on Facebook, what you thought. I always reply to messages and love if someone lets me know what they thought of one of mine. If you haven’t yet read any of mine, why not? Lol! I’ve got several that are free so you don’t even need to spend a penny to find out if you’d like my books, so pop over and grab one and give it a try.

More About You ~ The Fun and the Naughty

Share one thing about yourself that would surprise people who know you.Hmm, if I meet you, and shake your hand, please don’t be upset if I then use gel or a wipe to clean my hands lol. My ocd can come across as me being rude at times, but I can’t help it lol. I am working hard on trying to change some of it though.

Doggy style, cow girl or missionary?  Lol, seriously? Ok if you’re making me choose, doggy.

BUT we’ve just booked to go to Florida next September and I am SUPER excited about it. Our middle daughter and grandson are coming with us.

If you could choose any hot famous guy to take with you who would it be and why? Hmm, Ian Somerhalder, dang I shouldn’t need to tell ya why!!!!!!!!!!!

Thong, Bikinis, Granny Panties, or Boy shorts? Thong

Are you a dress up in heels or a jeans and flats woman? I’m a bit of both, depends on the situation, but I wear biker books with my jeans, not flats.

Homebody or Party all the time girl? Homebody, I like to have fun at times, but I’m far more relaxed in my own home.

Tall, Dark and Deadly or Smart and Sexy or Athletic and Funny? Tall, Dark and Deadly. A nice hot Vampire or Shifter please!

Significant other or Tearing up the town free and clear? Been married for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time lol, so significant other.

Favorite social network and why? Facebook, cause I can chat to peeps and keep up with stuff going on.

What was your “dream” job as a child? I wanted to be a police dog handler, but I was too short to get in! At that time women police officers had to be over five foot 6 and I’m a shortie at five one lol

What was the worst job you ever had while working towards being a published author?I’ve done a ton of different jobs, I think the worst was working in school dinners lol.

What would be your next best choice if not writing as a career? Dog handler! I love dogs, and would love to work with them if I could have.

About Your Latest Release

Introduce us to the main characters:

Rose is a hybrid Wolf/Witch and an Assassin, in a world ravaged by an inter-species war where Witches have been hunted to near extinction.

Seth is her mentor and who she’s lived with since her father took her to him as a child to keep her safe from the witch-hunters. He’s also a Witch, but first thing he taught her was how to mask herself and keep her safe. They have a complicated relationship but at the core they love each other.

Cassius Allarde is an ancient Vampire, tall, dark, deadly and sexy as hell, that’s been working to join the species and help to rebuild things. He’s not ready for what happens when Rose is sent to ‘take him out’, and neither is she!

Basilius, is a Demon who’s managed to gain control of The Council, and is the one who hires Rose to take out Cassius. His reasons are, let’s just say, less than honorable!

How do these two meet? Rose is hired to kill Cassius.

How would you characterize their relationship in one word answers, start, middle and end? Deadly, confused, love

What three words would you use to describe this story? Fast-paced, suspensful, HOT

She is different, unique, and one of a kind. Even in this weird new world. In a world ravaged by an inter-species war and almost devoid of Witches, she has to hide, keeping her heritage a secret. Only two people knew the truth about her: her father and her mentor; her savior, Seth. A highly trained assassin, she kills with impunity if the target deserves such a sentence. Unfortunately, far too many do. The lawlessness that stretches from coast to coast allowing unspeakable acts to go unpunished.

Vampires, Werewolves, Demons, and a host of other species now run free upon the earth and some of them were downright evil. She tasks herself with dealing with wrongdoers whenever she can. She is strong, fearless and powerful. An anomaly, probably the only Witch/Wolf hybrid left alive. She shields herself from detection. If anyone knew she has Witch DNA they would all come after her and she couldn’t take such a horde on and live.

Her assignments as the ‘go to’ assassin for The Council give her plenty of opportunity to wreak justice upon those who deal in death and destruction. Her targets mostly found dead with black lips and tongue; a result of her spells and not just the poison everyone thinks. So, when the new Head of the Council, Basilius, a Demon, tasks her with taking out the most powerful Vampire alive she can’t refuse. Can she?

The Black Rose will strike again for the good of humanity. It’s what she believes she’s been born to do and she will tackle this as she does all of her missions; with deadly intent. There’d be no difference this time. Would there? Or is the dangerous Vampire, Cassius Allarde, not all that he seems?

Come follow Rose’s journey as she fights to find out the truth. About the Demon, the Vampire and the Witch hunt that destroyed most of her kind. Book 1 in A K Michaels new series, The Black Rose Chronicles. If you like your dystopian books with the added bonus of supernatural beings in abundance then this book is for you.
