He was acerbic. Mean. Callous. Had she turned him into this? Natalya placed a hand on her stomach. This man wasn’t her Aedan. This man, she didn’t know. This man, she couldn’t count on helping her because he was a good person.

“This was a terrible idea,” she muttered to herself.

“Yes, it was,” Aedan replied. “So why don’t you head back to your lover and don’t ever return.”

She’d expected those words, anticipated them, dreaded them. But the punch of pain far outweighed anything she could have imagined.

“How did you know about Diego?” she asked hoarsely. She’d never told him. “Did you check up on me?”

“After you left that message telling me you weren’t coming back, I actually thought that you might be in trouble. That you might need me, and you were trying to protect me. Rogan sent someone to check up on you. Turns out you were great.  How soon did you fall into bed with him, Natalya? As soon as you arrived? Or was it planned before you left?”

“Of course not!” She was stunned that he would even think that. “Aedan, you don’t understand. I—”

She bit down on her lip as the door opened, and Rogan came in carrying a large tray with a carafe of coffee, three cups and a plate piled high with rich, chocolate brownies.

“The last of Tilly’s baking.” Rogan placed the tray down on the coffee table. “I had to hide this lot just to make them last this long.”

Natalya watched as he poured out the coffee. “Tilly? Is that your wife?”

Rogan’s eyes were cool but not unkind as he studied her. “No, a friend. I’m not married. Neither is Aedan.”

She knew Aedan wasn’t married. She read the tabloids. It was self-punishment, watching him with one stunning woman after another on his arm. But so far, none of them had seemed to last.

“What about you, Natalya? Are you married?” Rogan asked.

“Me? No, I’m not involved with anyone.”

“Dumped you, did he?” Aedan asked, as he rose and poured himself another whiskey. He leaned against the opposite wall, almost as though he was trying to get as far away as possible from her.

Natalya concentrated on trying to keep her hurt hidden. She’d known this would be difficult. She hadn’t expected him to welcome her with open arms. But knowing how warm and loving he’d been before, and facing his icy wrath now, was more of a shock than she’d anticipated.

“Actually, I left him. Aedan, you don’t know the full story—”

“I don’t want to know the full story. You left me so you could fuck a drug lord. What more is there left to say?”

“Aedan, if you’ll just listen to me. It isn’t what it seems—”

“Oh, so Rogan’s man had it wrong? You didn’t fall straight into bed with Diego Mota?”

“No…I mean yes… urgh, you are so frustrating sometimes!” Her temper flashed.

“Natalya, why don’t you tell us why you’re here.” Rogan gave Aedan a warning look. “And Aedan, don’t interrupt.”

“I almost don’t know where to start.” She ran a shaking hand over her face. She was shattered. Had she ever been this exhausted? Maybe when Mateo was a baby. But now she no longer had that glow of being a new mom, of feeling like she could do anything.

Now she was just desperate and scared. Very, very scared.

“Someone kidnapped my son. I need your help getting him back.”

What inspired you to write your first book? I was inspired by something another author said about coming up to a certain age and realizing she hadn’t accomplished what she wanted to. I felt the same way, so I decided it was time to finally write like I had wanted to for so long.

How much real life do you put into or influences your books? I get a lot of inspiration from what is going on around me. I often take notes about things I hear or watch.

What is the hardest part of writing for you? Editing. I loathe editing. Part of the problem is that I set impossible deadlines for myself though.

What are your current projects? I am working on an age play story and the second story in the Cavan Gang series.

How do you go about choosing the title for your book(s)? I have always struggled with titles and I often enlist help to brainstorm titles.

What is your favorite genre to write? I love anything to do with romance, but my favorite would have to be sci-fi.

Generally, how long does it take you to complete a book from idea to handing it over to your publisher? About 8-10 weeks

Do you ever use someone in your life as a sounding board for ideas or do you prefer to work alone? I use my husband for some ideas. I don’t always agree with him though lol.

Do your travel to research for your book(s)? I went on a six week trip to the US and Canada for research which was awesome.

Did you learn anything while writing your book(s)? Lots! You are always researching and learning when you write.

Have you ever had an idea for a book but never written it and what is it?Too many ideas to list. But they are all sitting on my computer, waiting for me. I would love to write a Dystopian book one day.

When writing, do you have a process? I try to write the whole book before I go back and edit because editing as I go slows me down and interferes with my flow. Doesn’t mean I always stick to that plan, though.

Do you have any advice for new authors looking to make their own literary statement? Write. Write, write and then write some more. Finish the book. Research publishers before publishing with them.

How many books have you written? Do you have a particular favorite? My favorite is Her Old-Fashioned Boss.

Where do your ideas come from? Everywhere. What I read, what I see, what people tell me, my own personal experience.

How many books do you currently have published? 21

Are you working on anything right now? An age-play story and the second book in the Cavan Gang series.

Do you have a favorite Hero or Heroine from any of your books and why? I love Sam from Her Old-fashioned Boss. He was a really fun character to write.

Do you have anything you would like to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read your work(s)? Big thank you to all my readers, I couldn’t do any of this without you. You’re all amazing.

Kathleen Brooks Interview

What inspired you to write your first book?I like to daydream and I had this story in my head that wouldn’t go away. For months, it kept taunting me until I finally wrote it down.

How much real life do you put into or influences your books? Quite a bit. I grew up in a small town, went to college in a small town, worked in a small town, and now live in a small town. So it was easy to get the feel for Keeneston from my experiences.

What is the hardest part of writing for you? Sometimes my mind moves faster than my fingers. I have to have notebooks everywhere in case I get ideas for future stories so I don’t forget them. Then of course, editing is never fun.

What are your current projects? I’m working on Forever Hidden, Book Two in the Forever Bluegrass Series.

How do you go about choosing the title for your book(s)? It usually involves lots of alcohol. No, I’m kidding—kind of. But it’s a long process of trying to find exactly what words reflect the feel of the story.

What is your favorite genre to write? Romantic Suspense.

Generally, how long does it take you to complete a book from idea to handing it over to your publisher? Three to four months.

Do you ever use someone in your life as a sounding board for ideas or do you prefer to work alone?

Yes. If I hit a snag in the story, then I talk out the scene with my husband. He’s always the first person to read my book too. But if I’m freaking out about a writer’s life type of thing, then I have a great group of friends that I call.

Do your travel to research for your book(s)? Sometimes, but lots of times I use places I’m already familiar with. I also do a lot a research online. I have a young child, so travel isn’t always feasible.

Did you learn anything while writing your book(s)? I always learn new things. Researching the subject matter for each book opens doors to new information all the time.  And I always learn a few rules of grammar during each editing process.

Have you ever had an idea for a book but never written it and what is it? I have a entire folder of ideas for books that I haven’t written yet, but plan to get to eventually. So stay tuned and you’ll find out what they are!

When writing, do you have a process? Yes. I make sure to limit how long I write each day.  I designate my child’s school hours to writing and then push it aside once she is home.  That helps me maintain a good work-life balance. I also have a song playlists for writing.  Each playlist is designed to fit the overall mood of the scene.

Do you have any advice for new authors looking to make their own literary statement? Keep writing. The more you write, the more you’ll find your own unique voice.

How many books have you written? Do you have a particular favorite? I’m working on my 20th. Each completed work becomes my new favorite.

Why did you choose to use a publisher instead of self-publishing? I’m actually self-published. I chose that path because of the control I have over my material. It also works well with being mother who wants to make every concert and sporting event for my kid. I haven’t ruled out traditional publishing for the future, but I enjoy the challenges and rewards of being self-published at the moment.

Where do your ideas come from? Everywhere. I’ll see something in the news, overhear someone talking at a restaurant, have a conversation with my friends, or a random thought may pop in my head as I’m driving.

How many books do you currently have published? 19

Are you working on anything right now? Yes. I’m working on Forever Hidden, Book Two in the Forever Bluegrass Series.

Do you have a favorite Hero or Heroine from any of your books and why? I can’t pick–my heros and heroines are like my children, I can’t have a favorite!

Do you have anything you would like to say to your current readers or to those that haven’t yet read your work(s)? To my current readers, you all are the best. You are so supportive and love my books as much as I do. I can’t thank you all enough for that.

For future readers, I just hope to take you away for a while. I hope you enjoy the trip.

More About You ~ The Fun and the Naughty

Share one thing about yourself that would surprise people who know you.?I love Scream Queens–it’s my guilty pleasure.

Doggy style, cow girl or missionary? I plead the fifth to prevent self-incrimination. 🙂

What secret sinful pleasure do you keep hidden in your cupboards? A secret stash of Godiva chocolate.

Are you a wine or beer kinda gal? I’m a fruity drink filled with vodka kind of gal.

If you could go anywhere at all on your next vacation where would you go? A little hut over the water in Bora Bora.

If you could choose any hot famous guy to take with you who would it be and why? Scott Eastwood. I like men who are masculine and he’s certainly.

Thong, Bikinis, Granny Panties, or Boy shorts? Actually I like the cheeky panties. They’re like a cross between bikini’s and a thong.

Are you a dress up in heels or a jeans and flats woman? Both, but my weakness for sexy heels probably wins out.

Homebody or Party all the time girl? Homebody

Tall, Dark and Deadly or Smart and Sexy or Athletic and Funny? Well, my husband was a football player and he has a great, dry sense of humor, so I think that’s my type. However, I think you can’t go wrong with any of those!

Favorite social network and why? Instagram. I love taking pictures.

What was your “dream” job as a child? I wanted to be an astronaut.
